Zirconia Crowns

Dental Crowns

Dental zirconia crowns are dental restoration made of (metal-free) monolithic zirconia, improving both lost function and aesthetics of a natural tooth.
What makes dental zirconia crowns the most used material in dentistry today?

Zirconia crowns vs metal ceramic crowns

They both have the same function, restoring the lost function of a tooth. When teeth deteriorate over time or they lose their strength a dentist may suggest a dental crown or known as a dental cap. 20-30 years ago a metal cap that fits tightly onto the tooth surface covered with white ceramic to mimic the tooth color was used (Known as PFM or porcelain fused to metal crown). These crowns required lots of manual labor and time consuming since it was a long and primitive process compared to today’s standards.
Today for the last 20 years with the development of technology zirconia crowns have become the number one choice for most dentists. Since it is metal-free it mimics perfectly the color of the tooth as metal-free restorations allow more sunlight to pass the surface of the tooth making it more natural. With PFM translucency was not possible as the light is blocked from the metal used making the tooth look less vital and less natural.
Zirconium crowns require less time to produce as the whole process is computerized. Thanks to Cad Cam technology machines work in 3D to cut a zirconia block exactly as required.

How is zirconia crown made?

Step 1 - Tooth preparation

Step 2 - Impression taking (this could be done using an intraoral camera or silicon material poured into a tray that has to stay in your mouth for 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 3 - The technician will design the crown in the computer and then a machine will cut the tooth accordingly from the zirconia block f into the machine.

Step 4 - The zirconia block is then transferred to a special oven where it will stay for hardening. This process will take approximately 12 hours.

Step 5 - The crown is placed in the model where the technician adds layers of ceramic or stains to match the color of your teeth.

Most of the time the crown does not require multiple appointments as our clinic has an in-house laboratory.

Zirconia crown vs Emax crowns

Emax crowns are usually used in front teeth as they have superior aesthetic results and front teeth do not have loading forces that require extremely hard materials to withstand occlusal forces. On the other hand, zirconia teeth can achieve both function and aesthetics front and back teeth. However its primary usage is suggested for back teeth.
